Quick Response (QR) codes are a type of bar code that can be placed on physical objects.  This presentation shows the uses of QR codes for storing URL addresses. When scanned using a smart phone with the QR code reader application, the QR code directs the iphone to open a web page in the telephone's browser. 

In Environmental Health, QR codes are currently being used in Kern County on permits so that customers restaurant customers can use the QR code to link to the latest inspection report. 

It can also be used to link to instructional videos forms and other useful rsources online.  

The use of QR codes is free of any license. The QR code is clearly defined and published as an ISO standard. Denso Wave owns the patent rights on QR codes, but has chosen not to exercise them.
