Environmental Health Specialist I: This is the entry-level of this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties related to environmental health inspections and code enforcement activities. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. This class is flexibly staffed with the Environmental Health Specialist II.
Environmental Health Specialist II: This is the journey-level of the series registered by the State of California, competent to independently perform the full scope of duties required. This class is flexibly staffed with the Senior Environmental Health Specialist. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior level in that the latter is the specialist level which performs the most difficult, technical, complex and specialized health enforcement and project/program coordination which requires a higher degree of independent judgment on diverse and generalized assignments with a greater degree of accountability and ongoing decision making responsibility.Senior Environmental Health Specialist: This is the advanced journey-level class in the Environmental Health Specialist class series. Assignments at this level are characterized by the requirement to work at a high level of independence, by additional specialized knowledge requirements within the field of environmental health, by assignment to projects which are highly complex and difficult in nature, and/or by regular responsibility for providing lead direction and training to subordinate Environmental Health Specialists.
