Under general supervision manages an assigned district, performing plan reviews, inspections, vector surveillance and other environmental health tasks.
Major Duties, Responsibilities
Conducts field inspections from basic to moderately difficult for licensed food, pool, school and lodging establishments. Applies federal, state and local codes and regulations. Provides recommendations for corrective actions for inspections performed. Investigates environmental health complaints. Advises licensed and non-licensed facilities in accordance with federal, state and local codes and regulations. Prepares and presents written reports. (50%)
Conducts plan reviews for simple to complex food and motel establishments; reviews and approves food safety plans; performs construction inspections of establishments; performs opening inspections for food, pool and motel establishments. Works in conjunction with other agencies to ensure cooperation for meeting all federal, state and local codes and regulations. (20%)
Performs disease surveillance which includes mosquito trapping for testing of West Nile Virus and other pathogens. Conducts insect larvae surveys and applies pesticides when appropriate. (20%)
Instructs Food Worker classes. Completes special event coordination and inspections. Educates the public on Environmental Health issues. (5%)

One year of experience working as a Registered Sanitarian in the area of Environmental Health or a related field; or three years of experience working as a Sanitarian Aide (EHS I) under the direction of an RS, or a combination thereof.
High school diploma or GED. State of Arizona for a Registered Sanitarian.

Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves personal contact with vendors and others inside and/or outside the municipality for the purposes of obtaining information, making reports, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.
Must possess, or be able to obtain as well as maintain, a license as a Registered Sanitarian issued by the State of Arizona within six months of starting employment. Obtain and maintain a State of Arizona Pesticide Applicator License in the General Pest Control/Public Health category. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License without restrictions. Able to use a laptop or desktop computer and general office machines.
Must be able to lift 40 pounds, bend and stoop, squat, kneel, stand, walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and perform other body movements consistent with job responsibilities.
